Dear Parents and Guardians:
My goal here is to inform you regarding the procedure to close school due to inclement weather and poor road conditions. The Superintendent has the final decision on whether to close schools due to adverse weather conditions. However, the recommendation of the Director of Transportation and Operations is weighed carefully before making a decision. We always err on the side of safety when it comes to transporting our students. When the decision to close schools for the day is made, we use the SchoolReach automated parent notification system. The pre-recorded message is sent out to parents, guardians and staff.
Another option for the Superintendent to consider is a one-hour or two-hour delay to the start of the school day. Again the recommendation of the Director of Transportation and Operations is carefully considered. When the current weather forecast calls for improving road conditions in the morning hours, the one or two-hour delay gives bus drivers, van drivers and families some leeway on transporting students to school. Again we use the SchoolReach parent notification system to communicate the one or two-hour delay options. In the event of a one-hour delay, district schools will not be open at the normal time. Schools will open one hour later and the bus pick up times will be one hour later than the normal pick up time. With a two-hour delay, district schools will not be open at the normal time. Schools will open two hours later and the bus pick up times will be two hours later than the normal pick up time.
HOW WILL WE MAKE OUR DECISION?
- Amount of snow and ice accumulation, or freezing rain.
- Whether precipitation is expected to stop.
- And, whether or not the temperature is expected to increase in the early morning hours.
WHO WILL MAKE THIS DECISION?
As Superintendent, I am responsible for the final decision based on the above factors and recommendations from the Director of Transportation and Operations.
HOW WILL THE PUBLIC BE NOTIFIED?
Parents and staff will receive phone messages through our SchoolMessenger System. You can also check our website and Facebook page. Tune into WLBZ-TV Channel 2, WABI-TV Channel 5 for information on school closings.
We hold the safety of our students as the #1 priority.
Thank you for your support in keeping students safe.
